The traditional music of Uzbekistan, a small country formed with the dissolution
of the Soviet Union, has been brought to the United States by tanbur and violin
player and vocalist Ilyas Malayev. Formed shortly after Malayev emigrated to the
United States in 1992, the group focuses on the shash maqam, a repertoire of 200
songs formed from six lengthy maqams. In addition to Malayev, the ensemble
features Iskhak Katayev (violin), Ezro Malakov, Muhabbat Shamayeva, Osher
Barayev, Ilyau Khavasov, Rushel Rubinov, Abokhai Aminov, and Roman Narkolayev
(vocals). ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide .
